Start in the back of your room and use your upright vacuum, or the largest attachment on your canister vacuum, to go over the carpet in straight passes from left to right. Next, start at one side of your room and vacuum the carpet from back to front crossing over the areas you just cleaned. Overlap and work slowly on this second pass.

Occasionally, you may want to deodorize and freshen your carpet. To make your own carpet freshener, mix 2 cups of baking soda with 10-20 drops of essential oil in a 16-ounce canning jar. Use a kitchen knife to blend the ingredients together.
Punch holes in the canning jar lid and sprinkle the freshener on the carpet in the middle of the room. Allow the powder to remain on the carpet for a few hours before you vacuum.
